Scholarship
Recognition of academic achievement combined with leadership accomplishments could not take any higher priority than it does with Kappa Sigma. Each year the Kappa Sigma Endowment Fund awards $250,000 to deserving undergraduates through the Kappa Sigma Scholarship-Leadership Awards Program. The Gamma-Psi chapter at Oklahoma State consistently has earned more of these awards than almost any of the other 215 chapters of Kappa Sigma. The majority of the awards are for $500 and $1000, while 38 endowed "Named" awards in the amount of $2,500 given out each year to the top Kappa Sigma undergraduates in the country. In recent years, our chapter has had as many as three "Named" award winners in one year along with numerous lower award recipients. Although the awards are in no way need-based, they are intended to aid in the ever increasing educational costs of attending college. But more importantly, our chapter's success in this program is proof positive of what can and has been achieved by members of our fraternity. Academic performance is also recognized on the chapter level in numerous way. From special dinners for the highest achieving individuals to perferred room and parking space picks, strong academic credentials are valued by all of members. In fact, to even be initiated into the fraternity pledges must meet a minimum grade point average during the previous semester. If any member should fall below this level after pledgeship they are subject to required study hours and limited social and intramural activities until their academic standing improves. Kappa Sigma has established many aides to the academic pursuits of our members to ensure their success. The chapter maintains a bank of files from courses that previous members have taken so that whenever somebody has an exam in a class, they can reference previous semesters' exams to know what format and type of content to expect. Starting in pledgeship, Kappa Sigma urges everyone to take advantage of the Math Learning Resource Center and the Writing Lab for the extensive tutoring and counseling services that each offers. The chapter also conducts a quite "study hall" every Sunday through Thursday evening after dinner in the dining and main rooms. While pledges and members with borderline grades are expected to benefit most from this amenity, iyou will also find the best upperclass students taking advantage of the enviroment to complete their coursework as well. This also allows those that are struggling in their courses to seek help from the better students as the do homework and study as a group. As you can see, the environment, tools, and incentives needed to succeed in college are embodied in the Kappa Sigma experience. We are dedicated to making sure that when our members graduate from college that they are competitive entrants into the job market thanks to their educational experience at Oklahoma State University. |
